You Can't Be Too Careful

You Can't Be Too Careful

Bob Sanchez

Crime / Humor and Comedy / Mystery

Here are several short tales meant to chill, cheer, or amuse. They will neither educate you nor make you a better person, but perhaps they will make you smile.Nankichi Niimi is undoubtedly one of Japan's most highly regarded writers of fantasy fiction. Book 3 of Tales from a Japanese Dreamland is an introduction to Niimi's writing through one of his most famous children's stories. Mama fox only wants the best for her little one, so when the cold winter arrives and her precious boy needs some mittens, then she knows what she must do. The only problem is that she is afraid and her legs won't take her any further. So her son must go on his own. The highlight of this delightful children's story is the beautiful description of the foxes' journey through the snow covered woods during the middle of the night.Buying Mittens is also available in Books 2 & 5 of the series Tales from a Japanese Dreamland.Nankichi Niimi was born Shohachi Watanabe in what is now Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, on July 30, 1913, with the year 2013 marking 100 years since his birth. It was recently estimated that over 60 million people have read Gon the Fox which he penned at just 17 years of age. Although Niimi went on to write a large number of poems and short stories, such as Buying Mittens, Grandpa's Lamp and When the Thieves Came to Hananoki Village before his death from tuberculosis at age 29, Gon the Fox is undoubtedly the most famous and well-loved of all his works, and perhaps the most famous Japanese children's story of all time. About Little J BooksHi, my name is Paul and I started Little J Books because I personally wanted to be able to read more of these kinds of Japanese stories in English, especially in ebook form. By putting these stories into an ebook format they will be available for anyone to access anywhere in the world, forever. If you know of any other Japanese stories like these that it is hard to get your hands on (because they are sold out or just too expensive), please let me know.

Blind Overlook

JC Simmons

Mystery / Crime

Blind Overlook (FULL VERSION): A beautiful, enigmatic young woman who owns an art gallery in New Orleans hires Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester") to travel to Maine where a body has been found fitting the description of her brother. Delving into this situation leads Leicester straight into a confrontation with the most powerful Mafia figure in the United States and many suspicious locals.Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester") is a retired airline pilot, retired because he could not stand the bureaucratic web the government spun over the aviation industry, and partly because anyone with the price of a bus ticket could fly on the airlines which resulted in overbooking, overcrowding, and near chaos on every route. Raised in a family of Judges and police officers, the only thing he knew to fall back on was the law. Opening his own private investigation business was a natural evolution, especially since he had trouble with authority, and could work outside the constraints of legalese. Handling mostly aviation related cases, recovery of stolen aircraft, investigating drug-hauling pilots, and helping set up corporate aviation departments kept him busy.In Blind Overlook we find Leicester doing a favor for an attorney friend and taking a case far removed from aviation. It involves something he knows nothing about, the art world. A beautiful, but enigmatic young woman who owns an art gallery in New Orleans hires him to travel to Maine where a body has been found fitting the description of her brother and partner in the gallery. He has not been heard from and the young lady grows concerned as he was traveling with four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash with which to buy a collection of work by an artist named, Rockwell Kent. Delving into this situation leads Leicester straight into a confrontation with the most powerful Mafia figure in the United States, a local detective, a police sergeant, local fishermen, and a friendly, but suspicious waitress at a local caf . The entire populace of the small community seems involved in the murder, the missing brother and his money. Maine coastal locals and offshore islands provide a unique setting for a powerful work reminiscent of Ross MacDonald or John D. McDonald. Character driven and plot oriented, this is a must read for the serious Mystery/Thriller 'aficionado.'There are a total of 10 ebooks in the Jay Leicester Mysteries Series by JC Simmons:Blood on the VineBlind OverlookSome People Die QuickIcy Blue DescentThe Electra FilePopping the ShineFour Nines FineThe Underground LadyAkel DamaThe Candela of Cancri

A Nice Jagged Edge An Atticus & Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series Short Story Prequel (A Private Investigator Mystery Crime Thriller Series, Book 2)

Carlyle Clark

Crime / Mystery & Thrillers / Fantasy

He thought she was the perfect victim. So did she. Neither could have been more wrong.Previously published under the title: "HE'S FASTER" A Nice Jagged Edge is an action-packed darkly comedic short story prequel to Carlyle Clark’s first novel in the gallows-humored mystery crime thriller series Children from Dark Houses. Before Rosemary Sanchez became a private investigator and a combat veteran, she was a just girl who wanted to spend a quiet night alone in a hideaway cabin in the woods, pondering the biggest decision of her life. Unfortunately, she soon realizes she is far from alone. A man lurks in the night, his cruel compulsions driving him into the cabin after Rosemary, and it will take every ounce of her courage and cunning just to see the dawn. What Readers are Saying . . .“This short story takes you from hilarious to edge-of-your-seat intense in 60 seconds.” —Audra Middleton author of Hitchhiker “There was a thread of dark humor - even in the midst of such suspense - that I totally appreciated.” —Mareena McGir Q & A with the AuthorQ – With all the great mystery thriller series out there, what makes the Atticus & Rosemary series stand-out? A - Writing these, I was determined to conjure stories like the ones I love, dark and violent yet somehow still often humorous, and driven by heroes with heart and courage and a sense of justice that’s not always in line with what’s legal. Crime stories like that had me devouring countless private investigator novels, thrillers, and pretty much any series with a detective, public or private, but especially those with characters driven to do “the right thing.” Atticus and Rosemary embody what Raymond Chandler described in his essay The Simple Art of Murder: “But down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid . . . He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor, by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it.” It is crucial to me to have a woman who lived up to this billing, perhaps even more so than the man, and Rosemary more than fits that bill. Q - What order should I read the series in? A – I suggest you read the series in the chronological order below, however each works perfectly as a standalone. Be sure not to go by publication order, because the series was not published in chronological order. #0 - A Nice Jagged Edge (An Atticus & Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series Prequel) #1 - Children From Dark Houses (An Atticus & Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series) #2 - The Black Song Inside (An Atticus & Rosemary Mystery Thriller Series) #2.5 - There are Degrees to this Darkness (An Atticus Mystery Thriller Novella - coming soon) Atticus & Rosemary Private Investigator Mystery Crime Thriller Series Categories: - Private Investigator Series - Mystery Series - Crime Thrillers - Private Detective Novels - African-American Mystery, Suspense & Thriller - Woman Sleuth - Humorous Mysteries

Mystery / Crime

Pristine offshore islands, coastlines ruined by casino hotels, and Gulf of Mexico waters is the setting for intrigue, horror, and quick death. A must read for any aficionado of the Mystery/Thriller genre.Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester"), a retired airline pilot now running his own investigation firm, is sent a client by his old friend Guy Robbins, an attorney on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. The client is a horribly disfigured young female marine biologist who is Director of a research lab on Cat Island, twelve miles off the coast of Gulfport. Her disfigurement is the result of an attack by a tiger shark during a dive to the wreck of a World War Two German submarine sank during the war by the U.S. Navy off the coast of Chandeleur Island.During a two year recovery period the scientist becomes convinced the attack was orchestrated by someone who wanted to steal the formula for a shark repellent being developed at the research lab. The repellent, if perfected, would be worth billions of dollars. How a pelagic shark could be used to attack a specific diver in the open ocean becomes the enigma behind the investigation of this mystery thriller. One of the most enigmatic characters is the marine biologist herself. Annatoo Yillah, a direct descendant of Polynesian parents, is as strange as she is intelligent. A woman who, though educated in the west, believes she is an ancient God of Tiburon - a shark god. Other characters in the work are: Anna Yillah's two research assistants, George Lenoir and Vickey Fourche, brilliant graduate students from Mississippi State University, who worship and learn at the feet of their mentor; Susan Weems, a lifelong friend and former colleague of Anna Yillah, enters the scene with a bizarre tale of love and friendship; a career criminal and shrimp fisherman, Bob Sabado, who is tied to the lab by unrequited love. Then we meet Hebrone Opshinsky, one of those unforgettable characters that linger on in our mind forever. An "in-country" Viet Nam soldier trained as a silent killer and put back on the street after the war without any indoctrination in how to adjust to a peaceful society. A man who is more deadly than all the sharks in the Gulf of Mexico and lives among the underbelly of the shrimp fishermen along the docks of the Mississippi Coast. Finally, we meet a Police Detective and a Chief of Police who could not be more different in their investigative techniques. Both think Jay Leicester may be responsible for three murders and an attempt at a fourth. After meeting with Anna Yillah and conferring with Guy Robbins, Jay takes the case and accompanies her to Cat Island. Understanding why a brilliant research scientist could believe an attack in the open ocean by a shark could be purposefully accomplished is the first priority. He learned quickly that not only was it possible, but that it was exactly what had happened. With hundreds of visiting scientists rotating on and off the island doing research, the list of possible suspects seems insurmountable, but soon is narrowed to a select few. To expose the antagonist Anna and Jay recreate the original dive on the German submarine. It goes horribly wrong resulting in a ghastly death and failing to reveal a murderer. Starting over, Leicester finds an unlikely ally in an original suspect. This assistance leads to the discovery of the killer, but not before another innocent life is lost, and Jay is confronted with his own mortality.Pristine offshore islands, coastlines ruined by casino hotels, and Gulf of Mexico waters is the setting for intrigue, horror, and quick death. Within the Walls of Westfield - A Diary of Madness

Peter Davidson

Crime / True Crime / Nonfiction

The contents of this transcript were discovered after clean-up operations began at the Westfield Psychiatric Hospital on 1st October 2009. Contained inside are field notes regarding the strange & abnormal progress of patient Jonathan Winterhall Gray, taken from the discovered journal of Dr Henry Renholm.Following the Era of Conflict between Homo-Sapiens and the Cyborgs they created, a tentative period of cooperation emerged. The residual population was heavily skewed to the Borg template. By 2175, the radiation threat from the dissipating ozone layer had escalated to worrying levels. The Rift Incident had to be investigated, and a rigorous selection process for the crew resulted in four Borg and two humans heading for Jupiter space. What they discovered would become known as The Jupiter Paradox. Was it a genuine paradox or merely a puzzle to which there was no acceptable solution? What would happen if they did nothing? It clearly illustrated that the Borgs and their creators would have to strengthen their alliance quickly in order to deal with the discovery, and that wasn’t going to be easy.

NOT the whole book. An SS officer is found standing over the body of a comrade, a smoking pistol still in his hand, a murder in a place of murders. His pleas of innocence force a court martial and he knows that there is only one man in the camp capable of defending him; a Jewish prisoner called Manfred Meyer. Manfred Meyer is forced to build a defence for him in his court martial. Drawing on his years of experience as a criminal lawyer in Berlin, Meyer must unravel the deceit and interpret the lies that infect the concentration camp and work to have him found not guilty. Following Meyer and his family through their lives in Berlin, the Nazi rise to power and their inevitable arrest and incarceration in Auschwitz, Meyer will do almost anything to see his wife and children. Almost anything. Can his abilities as a lawyer interpret the facts of this seemingly impossible case? As a Jew, should he even defend an SS officer? And is he actually guilty of this crime? But the officer must be found innocent if Meyer is to see his family again. This story follows Manfred Meyer, from his beginnings as a lawyer in 1930s Berlin after being taken under the wing of the city's most capable defence lawyer in the most prestigious law firm in Germany, Bauer & Bauer. Meyer's confidence and experience build as his cases become more complex and more difficult to defend. His success is widespread and he, his wife Klara and their twin daughters live a comfortable life in the capital. But Germany is changing. The Nazi Party has come to power and Meyer's Jewish heritage has become a crime. Life becomes more and more difficult until even in spite of Meyer's connections he is forced to leave his position as Bauer & Bauer's pre-eminent lawyer. Then, one night, the inevitable knock at the door heralds the long train journey to the east and the death camps of Poland for Meyer, his wife and his children. Split from his family on arrival, Meyer does what he can to survive in a place designed for death. He stays alive with help from the other inmates he has befriended, helping each other through the long days of hard labour, his only wish being that he could see his family again. A forlorn hope until circumstance throws a real chance his way. "A film in the making", "Worth TEN stars, this book is possibly my all time favourite", "Compelling read" - Amazon reviews ABNA Expert Reviewer: What is the strongest aspect of this excerpt? This excerpt was very well done. This time period in world history has always been fascinating and this excerpt was exceptionally written. Much research had to have gone into the writing of this. Facts and date, actual happenings were well represented. The main character was well rounded; his sorrow, hopes, dreams, all very well high lighted. What aspect needs the most work? Improvement would be hard to define as the author has a knack for writing and keeping the reader's interest. The author's ability to control interest and keep the reading fresh is apparent. What is your overall opinion of this excerpt? History lovers would enjoy this book. I have a feeling this book is not for the squeamish or faint of heart given the subject matter. I would recommend this book to others -- and would hope the author has a bright and promising future.
