The Girl with the Violet Eyes

The Girl with the Violet Eyes

Jen Weddle

Fiction / Crime / Mystery

Alison Callahan, a lonely orphan girl soon finds out that there's more to her story then she realized quickly learning that she is the lost princess of an elven race and her destiny is to choose between two soul mates and save the world.Alison Callahan has been lost for quite some time, that is until she meets a strange boy on the bus home. She finds out that there is a lot more to her ordinary life then she could possible imagine. She will get to travel to far off lands where she meets two men that she's destined to be with. She can only choose one. Will she find the strength and courage to fulfill the prophecy and can she bring peace to two worlds that have only known war?Excerpt: As we start to go down the giant grassy hill, the snowflakes begin to fall all around us shimmering in the sunlight and I look to my left as we pass the body of lake that I had seen from the top of the hill. It sparkles as the snowflakes reflect on it covering it in a thin layer of snow. As we get closer to the lake I see shadowy figures dancing beneath the ice in the water.“What are those Riley?” I ask pointing towards the lake.“The souls of demons.” He says seriously.“Right.”, I smirk, imagining that he is trying to scare me.Lucas casts a wary eye towards the lake, but I become distracted by other things. I gasp at the scene before my eyes because unlike the ancient kingdom of the elves, Elacia is a large modern metropolitan city bustling with life and every inch of the city is lit up like an enchanted fortress. The only thing that makes it even appear to be a kingdom of creatures other than humans is the large wrought iron gate that surrounds the entire city, and the sound of horses hooves instead of car engines.

The Road to Hell

The Road to Hell

Paul Levine

Mystery & Thrillers / Fiction / Crime

“The Road to Hell” collects four stories by Paul Levine, the Edgar-nominated author of the bestselling Jake Lassiter series. The stories include “El Valiente en el Infierno,” (The Brave One in Hell), "Development Hell," "A Hell of a Crime," and "Solomon and Lord: To Hell and Back."Plus there are two free excerpts from the novels "Solomon vs. Lord" and "Mortal Sin."“The Road to Hell” collects four stories by Paul Levine, the Edgar-nominated author of the bestselling Jake Lassiter series. Levine's heroes travel dark and dangerous paths as they confront devilish and powerful villains. In “El Valiente en el Infierno,” (The Brave One in Hell), a 13-year-old Mexican boy tells his own story as he makes a treacherous midnight crossing into California in search of his father. The boy’s courage is tested when he runs into two gun-toting American vigilantes. “Development Hell” imagines a pitch session in which a bedraggled Edgar Allan Poe squares off with a slick Hollywood producer who wants to make a cheesy slasher flick out of “The Pit and the Pendulum.” Bookgasm praised the story as “going straight to the funny bone.” In “A Hell of a Crime,” a prosecutor prepares for a homicide trial while being pestered by his domineering mother, a famous lawyer herself. Just what role did she play in the murder? And how is the prosecutor’s enigmatic wife involved in the case? Two of the author’s best-loved characters, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, appear in “Solomon & Lord: To Hell and Back.” The ethically-challenged Steve Solomon and the very proper Victoria Lord are mismatched Miami law partners. Steve says he's going fishing with Manuel Cruz, a sleazy con man. Victoria knows that Cruz is an unlikely fishing buddy. So just what is Steve up to now? Something between mischief and murder. The "Solomon and Lord" novels have been nominated for the Edgar, Macavity and International Thriller Awards, as well as the James Thurber Humor Prize. “Remarkably fresh and original with characters you can't help loving and sparkling dialogue that echoes the Hepburn-Tracy screwball comedies. A hilarious, touching and entertaining twist on the legal thriller." – Chicago Sun-TimesThe book also contains an excerpt from "Solomon vs. Lord," the first novel of the bestselling series of legal thrillers. A quick synopsis: Victoria Lord follows all the rules. Steve Solomon makes up his own. When they defend an accused murderer, they'll either end up in ruin, in jail...or in bed. Here's what number one bestselling author Harlan Coben had to say: "Hiaasen meets Grisham in the court of last retort. A sexy, wacky, wonderful thriller with humor and heart."Finally, an excerpt of “Mortal Sin,” one of the award-winning Jake Lassiter novels, is included. This time, the linebacker-turned-lawyer has a dangerous conflict of interest. He’s sleeping with Nicky Florio’s wife...and defending the mob-connected millionaire in court. Florio has hatched a scheme deep in the Florida Everglades that oozes corruption, blood, and money. One false move, and Jake will be gator bait. “Recalling the work of Carl Hiaasen, this thriller races to a smashing climax.” – Library Journal. PRAISE FOR THE FICTION OF PAUL LEVINE“Mystery writing at its very, very best.” – Larry King, USA TODAY"Irreverent...genuinely clever...great fun." – The New York Times Book Review"Just the remedy for those who can't get enough Spenser and miss Travis McGee terribly." – St. Petersburg Times“Genuinely chilling.” – Washington Post Book World “Take one part John Grisham, two parts Carl Hiaasen, throw in a dash of John D. MacDonald, and voila!” – Tulsa Sun“Wildly entertaining blend of raucous humor and high adventure.” – St. Louis Post-Dispatch“Cracking good action-mystery...funny, sardonic, and fast-paced.” – Detroit Free PressABOUT THE AUTHORThe author of 17 novels, Paul Levine won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and was nominated for the Edgar, Macavity, International Thriller, and James Thurber prizes. A former trial lawyer, he also wrote 20 episodes of the CBS military drama “JAG.” His most recent novel is "Last Chance Lassiter." Look for "State vs. Lassiter," coming soon. Derick Campbell

Thriller / Crime / Science Fiction

Zombies Evolved is a modern day crime thriller with inspiration from science fiction and the supernatural. How do the Seattle Police investigate crimes committed by zombies living among humans?“Post-mortem living humans have rights too!”The unfortunate consequence of an incredible scientific breakthrough, evolved zombies have fewer emotions and greater primal urges than average humans. They can still speak and reason, learn and recognize, plan and co-ordinate. They have a sharp sense of humor, without the social filter that people are generally conditioned to put in place. They can become aggressive when hungry and violent when aroused or scared. Many evolved zombies are affected in somewhat unique ways. Some of them were closer in behavior to “traditional” zombies than most people suspected or hoped.Evolved zombies now live and work with normal humans, and have introduced new socio-economic classes for society to deal with – with behaviors far from norm. Polite society isn’t adequately prepared. My name is Rob Stack, and I work with the Infected Affairs Bureau of the Seattle Police – known to cops as the IAB and most citizens as “Zombie Relations”.

The Whack Job - An Eamonn Shute Short Story

Tony McFadden

Science Fiction / Crime / Mystery

Eamonn Shute and his girlfriend Nicky Muniz find their relaxing day torpedoed when they come across the dead body of one of Eamonn's friends. Eamonn, being the person he is, just has to stick his nose in.PrologueThe Scarlet King is the final book in the Sacred Water trilogy. In the first book the world of Daniel and Heather is introduced as well as the importance of the sacred water which contains iodine which prevents the development of deformed babies. These iodine deficient babies are referred to medically as cretins but in the world of Daniel and Heather they were called half brains. Their status was as sub humans and slaves. One of these half brains is Betty who is blessed with a way of knowing things and becomes instrumental in protecting the Sacred Water.Others had learned of the power of the Sacred Water and tried to capture the source which was located in the Forest which is as much a living thing as it is a place in the mountains. It is the efforts of Daniel and Heather with those of the Forest who defeat those who would have captured the spring of their sacred water. Not only those of the forest but also those of the northern and southern kingdoms were depended upon this single source of iodine. As was seen in the second book "The Time Before" another ancient people Those of the Red whose existence had been forgotten through time also sought the health of the Sacred Water but who chose force as their method. Now in the third book we find that the ancient enemy of Those of the Red also seeks the power of the iodine. They are of the East and much feared for good reasons. This series developed from my own interest in diseases of thyroid which was a major portion of my medical practice. The early descriptions of the Africans brought to this country as slaves contains drawings of their course facial features and descriptions of their slow mental status. It turns out that the majority of those captured into slavery were from the iodine deficiency areas of Africa. Many of our prejudices like those explored in this trilogy were based on medical issues which could have been easily solved had the knowledge been available. This book is written for young readers of all ages who are interested in science and medicine.

The Moss Garden Journal Of Chan Wing Tsit

The Moss Garden Journal Of Chan Wing Tsit

Richard Bell

History / Nonfiction / Crime

1750. A young Buddhist priest traveling to Korea is caught in storms, driven across the Pacific and shipwrecked. Lacking survival skills, he is taken in by the local people who are far from the barbarians he expected; they are complex, political, sophisticated, urbane and multilingual; a community of traders and priests with deep cultural and spiritual ways and little need for his Buddhist dharma. What does a Buddhist priest have to offer a complex, sophisticated culture steeped in political and commercial intrigue? Shipwrecked and alone among people of an ancient tradition with deep understanding of spiritual and pragmatic ways, who speak numerous languages and are preeminent traders maintaining deep and powerful social and spiritual customs, a young priest is forced to come to grips with the deeper teachings of his own path. This historical novel follows him as his assumptions of superiority fall away and he explores both the deeper aspects of Buddhism and the complex indigenous spiritual and cultural traditions he finds himself immersed in. The secret life of Jodie

The secret life of Jodie

Amber Thompson

Crime / True Crime / Nonfiction

Jodie is a perfectly happy average teenage vampire. Well she was perfectly happy until everything wemt wrong"To End All Others" is a short compilation of stories about World War I and the terrible struggles of humanity within that horrific war. It opens with "Another Dream," a poem which mirrors a work by Siegfried Sassoon, the decorated British veteran and conscientious objector of the war. The poem reflects the lasting, harrowing effects of the Great War on the men who sacrificed their boyhood for their nation; while the battles end, the war lives on for untold years in the minds of its veterans. Next, a father strives to make the world see reason as Europe descends into the abyss of war. The man mourns as a patriotic son embraces the nationalistic craze and eagerly joins the army. Throughout the following years, his thoughts and aching heart are shown through poignant letters to his wife. Yet, "An Era Recalled, a Sorrow Relived" displays that peace is not always fulfilling and seldom brings relief. Finally, "The Mandate" reveals a tale about the knights of the air, the Great War's pioneers of aviation. The French hero Georges Guynemer struggles to reconcile his humanity with his duty amid the furious skies over France. All told, "To End All Others" provides a fitting tribute to the millions of men whose lives were ended amid the mire of the trenches, the expanses of the air, and the flowing depths of the oceans. Perhaps, in some small way, it will ensure that we never forget their sacrifices.

You Can't Be Too Careful

You Can't Be Too Careful

Bob Sanchez

Crime / Humor and Comedy / Mystery

Here are several short tales meant to chill, cheer, or amuse. They will neither educate you nor make you a better person, but perhaps they will make you smile.Nankichi Niimi is undoubtedly one of Japan's most highly regarded writers of fantasy fiction. Book 3 of Tales from a Japanese Dreamland is an introduction to Niimi's writing through one of his most famous children's stories. Mama fox only wants the best for her little one, so when the cold winter arrives and her precious boy needs some mittens, then she knows what she must do. The only problem is that she is afraid and her legs won't take her any further. So her son must go on his own. The highlight of this delightful children's story is the beautiful description of the foxes' journey through the snow covered woods during the middle of the night.Buying Mittens is also available in Books 2 & 5 of the series Tales from a Japanese Dreamland.Nankichi Niimi was born Shohachi Watanabe in what is now Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, on July 30, 1913, with the year 2013 marking 100 years since his birth. It was recently estimated that over 60 million people have read Gon the Fox which he penned at just 17 years of age. Although Niimi went on to write a large number of poems and short stories, such as Buying Mittens, Grandpa's Lamp and When the Thieves Came to Hananoki Village before his death from tuberculosis at age 29, Gon the Fox is undoubtedly the most famous and well-loved of all his works, and perhaps the most famous Japanese children's story of all time. About Little J BooksHi, my name is Paul and I started Little J Books because I personally wanted to be able to read more of these kinds of Japanese stories in English, especially in ebook form. By putting these stories into an ebook format they will be available for anyone to access anywhere in the world, forever. If you know of any other Japanese stories like these that it is hard to get your hands on (because they are sold out or just too expensive), please let me know.

Mystery / Crime

Blind Overlook (FULL VERSION): A beautiful, enigmatic young woman who owns an art gallery in New Orleans hires Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester") to travel to Maine where a body has been found fitting the description of her brother. Delving into this situation leads Leicester straight into a confrontation with the most powerful Mafia figure in the United States and many suspicious locals.Jay Leicester (pronounced "Lester") is a retired airline pilot, retired because he could not stand the bureaucratic web the government spun over the aviation industry, and partly because anyone with the price of a bus ticket could fly on the airlines which resulted in overbooking, overcrowding, and near chaos on every route. Raised in a family of Judges and police officers, the only thing he knew to fall back on was the law. Opening his own private investigation business was a natural evolution, especially since he had trouble with authority, and could work outside the constraints of legalese. Handling mostly aviation related cases, recovery of stolen aircraft, investigating drug-hauling pilots, and helping set up corporate aviation departments kept him busy.In Blind Overlook we find Leicester doing a favor for an attorney friend and taking a case far removed from aviation. It involves something he knows nothing about, the art world. A beautiful, but enigmatic young woman who owns an art gallery in New Orleans hires him to travel to Maine where a body has been found fitting the description of her brother and partner in the gallery. He has not been heard from and the young lady grows concerned as he was traveling with four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash with which to buy a collection of work by an artist named, Rockwell Kent. Delving into this situation leads Leicester straight into a confrontation with the most powerful Mafia figure in the United States, a local detective, a police sergeant, local fishermen, and a friendly, but suspicious waitress at a local caf . The entire populace of the small community seems involved in the murder, the missing brother and his money. Maine coastal locals and offshore islands provide a unique setting for a powerful work reminiscent of Ross MacDonald or John D. McDonald.
