The Ruined City

The Ruined City

John Wilson

Science Fiction / Dystopia / Apocalyptic / Post Apocalyptic

Howard is a lonely, geeky tenth-grader dealing with a father who's had some kind of breakdown, a flaky, overprotective mother and frightening waking dreams. Then he meets Cate, a strange girl who convinces him that he is an Adept, which means he can communicate through dreams with other dimensions and, under certain circumstances, travel between them. Howard discovers that our world is only one of several dimensions swirling in time and space, and that one of the others, peopled by unimaginably powerful monsters, is approaching Earth for the first time in millennia. The last time the dimensions coincided, our world was saved by the breaking of a powerful golden mask in the Chinese city of Sanxingdui. Together, Howard and Cate travel through time and space, meeting other Adepts and avoiding lurking monsters, in a quest to find the three fragments of the golden mask and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

Jane Abbott

Apocalyptic / Post Apocalyptic / Science Fiction / Dystopia

Savage and apocalyptic, this is the new world. Devoid of rain, the earth has shrunk to dust and salt, hemmed by a swollen sea. Survivors gather to re-establish order but it's nothing like before. It is Jeremiah's world. Commanded by the cruel Garrick, Jem is a Watchman and hunter of Disses: rebels who dare to challenge the Tower and its ruling Council. Loner by design and killer by nature, he's unapologetically part of a cruel regime until a new assignment exposes a web of deceit, and past sins demand their reckoning. When a young boy elicits his sympathy, and an enigmatic woman his interest, Jem is made to question everything he believes before undertaking one last terrifying mission. Now he must do unto others if he's to take care of his own. In this dark and compelling first novel from a stunning new voice in fiction, it is impossible to know who is friend or foe, hero or villain.

UnStrung

Neal Shusterman

Young Adult / Science Fiction / Dystopia

This novella follows Lev after the events that occurred with Cy-Fi in Joplin. A better glimpse is provided of what led Lev into becoming a clapper. Although his entire journey is not accounted for, the sixty pages certainly answer many questions left vague in Unwind. This particular installment of the series is also a nice lead-in to UnWholly, for it introduces many problems that UnWholly centers on.
